Dahyu stopped and Semra, unable to see him in the blackness, ran into him. Tension filled the air until she felt she’d choke on it, but Dahyu finally broke the silence.

“The personal servant to the king is often his closest confidant. My father has been working for the king for longer than he has been king. I’m not a gossip, and I don’t easily divulge secrets that aren’t mine to share. The only reason you know about it is because I wanted to save your life and saw no better way. I’d appreciate it if you gave your word not to ruin the centuries-old secret that could get my father killed if it got out.”

Semra’s mind raced like a thousand galloping horses, threatening to run away with her. Anger, guilt, and confusion mixed together in a complicated cauldron of emotion in her chest. Something was off. He was lying—she could feel it in her bones. Still, his explanation made some sense. On the one hand, why would his father break the king’s confidence by sharing such a high-security piece of intelligence with his son? On the other hand, perhaps it was difficult to be the confidant of a king with no real confidant of his own.

Unsure of what to think, Semra decided that playing along for now would serve her purposes no matter where the truth lay. “I’m sorry. I just … I’m not used to trusting people, and it didn’t add up. Forgive me.”

“It’s okay. Thanks.”

Dahyu reached out with his hands and felt along the wall. “Ah! Here it is. They’re hand and footholds. Would you like to go first, or would you like me to go first?”

The question caught Semra off guard. “You first. Please.”

“Very well. Here, I’m reaching for your hand to show you where the first rung is … there you go. It should lift up to a disguised forest floor.”

Dahyu climbed a few rungs and Semra pulled herself up behind him before he pushed up a lid, allowing light to filter into the tunnel. Dahyu climbed out and reached back down for Semra. She allowed him to help her out of the tunnel, which came out right next to a large trunked tree in the woods. Leaves and other such things covered the lid so that when placed back in the ground it looked undisturbed.

Dahyu spread more leaves and brush over the edges of the entrance, turned to Semra, and smiled. “Well, it feels good not to be chased, doesn’t it!”

“I’m still being chased. I just can’t see my pursuers anymore. But yes, it’s nice.” Semra smiled back.

“Listen. I know today didn’t go the way you’d hoped, and certainly not how I would’ve wanted either, but we can’t give up on protecting the gala, so I’m headed back to the castle. I’ll meet you tonight, okay? Anything you need?”

Semra shrugged. “Try not to get yourself suspected or killed. Find out any word on the prince. If someone in the castle knows where he is, chances are the assassins do too.
